Hurricane Katrina Universal Service Fund Relief Information

Important Notice

The Federal Communications Commission announced March 1, 2006, the adoption of an Order extending its relief plan to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina through Universal Service Fund support in the Schools & Libraries and Low Income programs.  [ Extension of Deadline Order, PDF, 138KB]

USAC will update the information on this website with the specifics of the Order.

Highlights include:

  • Extension of the 2006 filing window for schools and libraries directly affected by Hurricane Katrina to October 2, 2006.
  • Waiver of the “two-in-five” rule, which prohibits applicants from receiving funds for internal connections for more than two out of every five funding years.
  • A three-month extension of the federal Hurricane Katrina Lifeline program until June 1, 2006.

This site provides key information for affected consumers, schools, libraries, health care facilities and telecommunications providers on the FCC’s plan to make available approximately $211 million of targeted support from the Universal Service Fund. The FCC has earmarked this temporary support for the reconstruction and restoration of telecommunications services to affected areas.
